Long term advisor gets the shaft sues
Jun 7th, 2011, 8:14am

An advisor from the IDS days gets terminated for not putting enough people in SPS and Riversource funds. Very interesting read on how Ameriprise really works.

Absurd.  He got fired because from 2006-2009 he did not deliver an SPS letter for any SPS account that he managed.  If you were an Ameriprise client and you found out you paid an annual management fee and the advisor did not do what you were paying the fee for you'd be pretty pissed.  As a matter of fact I believe you've made many posts over the years of advisors that charge financial plan fees yet fail to deliver the plan.  How is this any different?  Selective logic on your end.

Due process.  You start with the letter of discipline, then the verbal warning, then the written warning, then the more frequent compliance meetings, then termination.  You can't fire a guy who's built a business over a couple of decades because of a couple of late SPS letters.  But by building up a big enough paper trail to justify the termination in court if he decided to sue, they were smart to bide their time.  Now if this was a forgery or money laundering case I can assume they would not have been so patient.  I would bet also that the clients who had SPS accounts under his management could get their management fees refunded to them if they were to request it.

I read the suit more carefully. The plans in question are those yearly follow up "plans". Those plans are garbage and they're automatically charged by Ameriprise. He did his clients a favor by not doing the plan so they could be charged back. The yearly charge must be triggered by the SPS account. I know those plans on junk; you know those plans are junk as the sole purpose is to make profit off their existing clients suckers.
