Amex checking my credit report

Does anyone know how often they are allowed to do this?  I know it doesn't effect my credit score but I just pulled my credit reports today to make sure everything looked good and American Express has pulled my credit 2x in less than a month?  They pulled it in Dec and then again in Jan even though I have not contacted them for anything and my balance is nowhere near my credit line.  Thoughts?
