Vanguard Fails, Ameriprise Service Looking Good
Jul 16th, 2008, 12:16pm

http://money.cnn.com/magazines/moneymag/moneymag_archive/2004/04/01/365067/index...

For the first time ever, the Internet is aflame with complaints from Vanguard investors that echo Riepe's observations. As "john1963" posted on a bulletin board at morningstar.com in January, "By phone, I tried to get an answer to an obvious mistake by Vanguard, but was met by a very defensive responder. Instead of trying to help, they made excuses. I couldn't believe I was talking to Vanguard." Added Jeannette10: "After I thought the problem was resolved and the wrong account was deleted, it popped up AGAIN yesterday on my Vanguard site." And a former Vanguard employee, Doris (Dee Dee) Havens, has been circulating--to regulators, journalists and current Vanguard employees--an 11-page, single-spaced memo exhaustively listing alleged breakdowns in service.

Also.....

"Mutual fund companies use their Web sites to serve existing investors and attract new ones. But our reviews of the home pages of American Funds, Fidelity, Franklin Templeton Investments, and T. Rowe Price found flaws that would stymie an investor looking for basic mutual fund information. Only Vanguard's mutual fund home page passed all five of our criteria."

"How do full-service brokerage firms use their Web sites to reach millionaires who are active online? Not well, according to Forrester research. Our reviews of the Ameriprise Financial, Edward Jones, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, and Smith Barney home pages found flaws that act as obstacles for a prospect looking for retirement help. "

"Vanguard stood out, he added. "They've got far more loyal and satisfied clients than unhappy ones compared to their competitors," Brown said. "

More from the same 2004 article:

"Watch, don't worry

Some of this may be a natural outcome of Vanguard's enormous growth. Now that the firm has 17 million investors, even if Vanguard delivers perfect service to 99.9% of them, there would still be 17,000 disgruntled people. Still, managing director Michael Miller concedes that some investors have encountered service problems--especially in January, when, he says, "we got swamped" with that $10 billion in new cash from clients.

"I'm convinced that the [service] issues are transitory and volume-related," Brennan argues. "We are fanatics about monitoring client satisfaction." (Brennan calls Havens' memo "a litany of inaccurate and misleading assertions.") With the electronic display across from his office showing a maximum hold time of up to 10 minutes, Vanguard client relations boss Bill McNabb says the firm will hire "a couple hundred people" early this year to alleviate the service crunch. "

So, did Vanguard do it? According to JD Powers, they certainly did! They keep rating much higher in client satisfaction than Ameripoff does. Ameripoff rates below average, actually.

And let's remember that Ameripoff has 43 regulatory actions against them to Vanguard's very minor one.  Grin

Mecca - The truth is that I could have replied to any one of your posts because I really don't care what you have to say in return. I have had exchanges with you over a year ago and here you still are. Really that's sad....there are so many more important issues in the world, especially those that effect women that it is just sad that you are wasting your time here.  Is Palin worth your thought? With 4685 posts....really....get a life...it's just sad. That's an average of 12 posts a day. There are far more important issues in the world then how much you hate Ameriprise....why don't you start doing something that actually matters and people care about.

HI...did you miss me! So, let's see, if I had an investment firm that didn't have any advisors and I was talking to a site of people that didn't know any better would I focus on the actual web site....yea, that's what I would do! Let's forget that AMP just bought H&R and still has BILLIONS in cash - and that we actually have people that will meet with you face-to-face and not just offer index funds on a web site ....these fools on this site won't know that - "Vanguards website is totally better"

Good job "HOUSEWIFE... I MEAN MECCA!" You bring education to the masses and we all know it! You totally stand up against the worthwhile things that people do every year! At least I know that as an Ameriprise advisor in this market I am actually making a difference!!!! And not just wasting time bitching on a web site!  How many posts is that a day... time well spent, honey...you should be proud! Send me one to add to it! Respond! Your numbers will go up!! I will never get tired of pointing out how sad you are every year or so!!!! I'm sure if I show up 2, 4, 6, 8, months or a year from now you will still be here - GET A LIFE!!!!!

I've been an advisor for years and at the home office before that - the one thing we never have to worry about is the morons on this site - PLEASE!! If you want to actually matter - go out and actually do something that matters!!!! Stop posting bitch comments on this site like Mecca!!!!! That does NOTHING!!!!!!! GET off your ASS and Do Something!!!!!

and so it is written it is already in motion.  Not a big fan but the poster you speak of is "Macca", not "mecca",   stop defending and say something if you have any opinion and quote correctly.
