I'm a lurker. I haven't posted since December 2004. At that time my AXP Advisor was pushing wrap accounts (I forget the exact name now) I didn't move my 401k to AXP and I'm slowly tax wise getting what money I had invested out. So I just check in now and then to see what's new. I don't know it's an especially bad thing to do.

Hello. ETtoo here. Just lurking to find info. I just stumbled across this board last night while surfing for good financial message boards. Like others here, I am unhappy with Ameriprise Financial and have been for a long time. Reading the posts here finally convinced me to set up an account at Vanguard and transfer my Roth money over there. Now, I just have to set up an ING account for my EF and I will be done with Ameriprise. I have to admit I have been extremely happy with my installment certificate at AMEX and my corporate card, but Ameriprise seems to have a lot of issues with excessive fees. I don't mind paying someone for sound financial advise, but I do draw the line at sneaking a 5% deferred load onto my mutual fund in mid-stream. Even with fees being doubled, the load appearing magically was the final straw.

I came on-line to see what people have to say about Ameriprise because I just learned that it exsists and I am thinking about becomming a client. I am doing research. Listening but not talking because I have nothing to add to the conversation. But I have learned quite a bit already. I didn'tknow this is the old Americfan Express. You call it lurking, I call it listening and doing research.

wishbone.... Yes they go way back to what used to be "IDS". They keep changing their names to lure unsuspecting honest hardworking people into their web of lies and deception. Do not believe them, there are much better options! Does Schwab, Vanguard or Fidelity have to change their names every few years to try and run away from a terrible reputation?? I made the mistake of trusting them,you dont have to!! Angry

From 1894 through the 1930's the name was Investors Syndicate. Changing to IDS (Investors Diversified Services), the name remained in force until 1994.

Purchased by American Express 1n 1985, but did not change name to reflect that ownership until 1995.

The name was changed to Ameriprse in Sept. 2005 as a result of a spinoff from American Express.

That's right, Herman. BUT, that in no way proves that Ameripoff has a GOOD reputation. I think you should join in my quest for TRUTH!

What I am doing is listing firm names, the number of regulatory actions against them and the total amount of the fines. Except for Vanguard and Morningstar, I'm picking firms at random. So far.....

Ameriprise: 33 Regulatory actions 64 Million in fines
Vanguard: 1 regulatory action $10,000 fine
Morningstar: 0 regulatory actions
TIAA-CREF: 0 regulatory actions
DREYFUS: 2 regulatory actions (1 is pending) $1,000 fine
VAN KAMPEN: 3 regulatory actions $6,000 fine

Use NASD's Broker Check and the fines can be rounded. Remember...arbitration is NOT a regulatory action or a regulatory issue. Ignore arbitration. Copy my list and add to it.

One thing I can tell you is that out of 3,516 mutual funds that have received Morningstar Stewardship Grades, only 92 earned a big, fat F. Out of those 92, Riversource is in there 35 times.

I just joined. I will not be a lurker that never posts.

The company I work for frequently encounters unhappy clients of Amerprise. It's really unfortunate because Ameriprise has great advertising and they are obviously attracting clients. Too bad they don't have better products and better people to represent them.

My company does very little advertising, but we have great products and a great resource team for any complicated situations that may come up with a client's financial situation.
