Amex Supports Fraud!
Jul 31st, 2004, 7:45am

Let's face it, as Merchants we always get screwed by Amex, MC & Visa. No matter who is wrong! The cardmember has the upper hand. Well, now I'm in a situation where I am the Amex cardmember and I'm getting screwed! My company attempted to work with a marketing company online. They faxed us a Credit Card Authorization form for $500 which we signed and faxed back. There was a stipulation on the document that stated, If we approve of the success of thier marketing and wish to continue with their services at a later date, we will commit to $4500 advertising campaign.

Well, guess what this scammy marketer did? They altered our fax Authorization to say that Amex should charge us the full $4500 immediately. We disputed the charge and Amex came back to us 30 days later and said, "it's between you and the marketer" and reversed the dispute and now is holding us liable for the full $4500. We told them this was crazy and was fraud as well as the documented was altered, and they basically said tough luck! We requested an original signed document and Amex replied by saying that a Fax copy was good enough!

As merchants, I guess we could now alter credit card authorizations for 10 times the amount on the form and get paid from Amex. The card member will get screwed. I guess they now don't care about that either! (Just kidding) You get the idea! Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Mr Getting Screwed by Amex from both ends

Riley, Your wisdom is unnerving.  You take the card through paypal why don't you stop?  Wouldn't that be a better way of making a statement than your big red BS?

Say Austin Advisor,

Since you jerked my chain I am going to post to our Texan inventor forum links to this site.  All those budding business people really need to be warned to not deal with Amex.  All the name changes do not change the underlying nature of the company and their sales staff, many perhaps most of whom are lower than used car salesman.  And just as qualified.
