Thank you for for the post los3steve. The people on here that are criticizing you are out of line-it's obvious and assumed that someone would only want to use this information if they felt like they were treated unfairly-not to unjustly just get their money and fees back! This was very helpful information that I will attempt to use. Previously, I have called the corporate office, several times to try to rectify the fees being charged and the large up front fee the I was initially charged when I signed up with my adviser. My adviser left and I did not feel like it was a fair service. I was told when signing up that if I was unsatisfied I could request a refund... no questions asked. But I was denied because I didn't request it in a timely manor and probably because it was not in writing. But I will try your method. Thank you for the advice!

I’m a first time poster and wanted say thanks to everyone on this forum for all of the great info. I have searched and read several posts regarding Ameriprise and now have my own questions.

My mother is currently with Ameriprise and I recently discovered all of the fees they’re charging her. First, she is 72 years old and just trying to enjoy the rest of her life with the money she has. She isn’t looking to invest in anything aggressive and just wants to maintain what she has in funds that are low risk. She has over $500k, isn’t working, and lives off of her social security check plus one monthly dividend check. The rest of her dividends are being reinvested into her account.

Her CFA at Ameriprise is charging her $600 annually to do financial planning for her which I think is bogus given her situation. They’re also charging her roughly 1% in wrap fees and I found that her expense ratio averages out to 1.35%/ With simple math this averages out to over $10k in fees a year… aka TOO MUCH.

I’m new to all of this and have learned enough to make myself dangerous. That said, I think that we’re going to set her up with a Fidelity account. We have a branch that isn’t too far away for face time, I’m reading that their website is easy to use and navigate, and that their customer server is good.

Can I rely on Fidelity to help pick what is right for her? Is there anything I need to know regarding pulling the money out of her Ameriprise accounts? Her CFA told me that she isn’t being charged any load fees.

http://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=106629

To Whom it may concern: (since no one signed your letter to me)

This is to request a refund of all premiums paid to you since 1994, less
the administrative costs of providing this long term care policy.

I am appalled that you continue to raise rates on “Americans that age and
live longer”.

You filed a request to the Insurance Commission, reviewed by
the so called “Actuaries” that are bound by law to approve your request
so long as your request meets “the letter of the law”.

I have been unable to determine the names, addresses, or phone numbers of
the so called actuaries. It is a ghost panel that rubber stamps requests
from insurance companies that “meet the letter of the law”.

You threaten me with payment options and what happens if I don’t meet the
deadline and then add an insult stating that you “remain committed to
helping me meet my long term protection needs“. I don’t believe that for one
minute. I believe River Source Life Insurance Company is in the business of
making money at the expense of the elderly and has no concerns at all for it’
s policy holders.

I have considered “my options”, as you suggested, and I opt to drop your
long term care policy beginning with the premium due September 15, 2011. I
do not feel that you “value me as a client” or that you “look forward to
serving me” as suggested in your letter of July 13, 2011.

I feel you are gradually forcing me and other elderly
citizens out of the protection we bargained for with these continued rate
increases. I can not even be at peace or comfort because I know the rates are
going to go up again and wonder how I will be able to pay for rate increases
year after year.

I await an answer to this correspondence and my request for a refund of
premiums paid less the administrative cost of providing this policy.

I would also be interested in knowing just how much I have paid you for
myself and my deceased wife since 1994, for no return on my investment, not
even peace of mind!

Good summary. It was obvious to me that I was being taken advantage of after 4 meetings($1200), until the very end when he said he only charges 1.5% to get me a 5% return. No fees he says. what is the 1.5% for?

What if a person ask's what the risk is and the advisor give yolu a story that it isn't any riskier than other investments. aren't you suppose to trust him?

"What is the problem with having a conversation with the advisor regarding your issues? You were concerned some of the funds were too risky. Did you consider having a meeting with him where you say "Mr. Superior Advisor, I researched some of the funds you recommended to me and a few appear to be above my risk level"

What if a person doesn't know what a front end load or whatever else is being charged, how are they suppose to know they should ask the questions?

"Same thing with the front loaded funds. "Mr. Superior Advisor, I'm not sure I want to invest in funds that have a front load. What other options do I have?"

Some of these advisors do not mention any fee's at all except the fee for preparing the finincial plan.

I had an advisor look over my retirement plan to make sure a conservative portfolio that I had was appropriate and would meet my needs, Next thing I know, he had me sell my liquid cash investments to buy a REIT with 6% payout(which I thought was good) and the statement that it should go full cycle in a year to a year and a half. Not going to happen.

Next he tried to get me to purchase more REITS to the tune of 18% of my retirement funds, showing the high returns. I became skeptical at the high returns and having 18% in REITS in a conservative portfolio. Luckily I caught on before it was too late.
