Congratulations, on your first high ranking in 7 years at least as Ameriprise and probably longer including AEFA. They must've found people who don't look at their statements

Lets say I may or may not be a registered rep, so I may or may not be qualified to give some general advice on this topic.

Generally speaking share class selection is one of the first things an adviser who actually believes that functional knowledge of financial products is imperative to the conducting of his jobs duties learns. Its quite simple really

A shares; suitable for investors who will remain in a fund or family of funds (so long as they allow load free inter family exchanges) for no less than 5 years and plans on investing sufficient funds in said family to hit at least 2 break points (depending on family at least 100-150k)

B shares; same time horizon; 5 years plus, but suitable for smaller investment amounts. Higher internal fees for first 5 years, yet still less than loads on A share so long as assets aren't sold in first 5 years as this will trigger surrender charges.

C shares; time horizon on investment of less than 5 years. highest fees if assets are held for a long time (6 years plus). Most advisers do not like to sell as represent the smallest up front commission; but if you are only parking your assets momentarily in some low risk bond funds or dividend paying funds to earn some quick interest before you use the money to make a dent in the mortgage 3 years down the line these are the way to go.

A note on B shares; many mutual fund families have ceased sale of these assets do to a bad reputation over the CDSC. It stems from advisers using them to churn accounts much like they do with A shares. It is a damn shame because for the investor who does not fit the A share profile or does not have sufficient funds to warrant a fee based wrap account (one where the adviser bills an asset based annual fee instead of charging by the transaction and in the process assumes a grater level of liability known as the fiduciary standard) B share by far represented the most affordable way to invest for those who did not want to take the time and or the risk to direct there own investments.

I hope this quick overview of of share classes assists someone out there. I'm constantly fighting the stigma that people in my profession are soulless trash. I would be happy to chime in on more topics in the future if the board shows interest. Jiinga, I can answer your other ?'s if your still interested, just shoot me a PM. For the record Ameriprise is well known throughout the business for there happy meal plans. I kind of wandered on the board while searching for a prospectus on an Ameriprise VUL, and the good chuckle I've gotten here has certainly fueled my insomnia.

Got conned into an annuity 11 years ago when it was AMEX. Realizing it was a money pit I moved it to Vanguard and ate the surrender. After 10 years it finally went even with all things considered. Don't use this company you will regret.
